SHO’s Espinoza: It’s Crazy – But Garcia is Serious About Spence

By Steve Kim

So is Mikey Garcia, who over the weekend unified the WBC and IBF lightweight titles by out-pointing Robert Easter at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, really serious about jumping up two weight classes and facing IBF welterweight titlist, Errol Spence (24-0, 21 KOs)?

“As crazy as it sounds – and it does sound crazy – it is (serious),” said Stephen Espinoza, the head of Showtime Sports on Garcia’s interest in that particular match-up. Espinoza spoke to on Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles before Garcia faced Easter as the main event on his network.

Garcia, who won his first title at featherweight would be facing daunting odds in facing the hardest hitting and most physical 147-pounder on the planet. He’s won world titles at 126, 130, 135 and 140-pounds.

Back in March, Garcia, had a tough fight in winning the IBF junior welterweight title against previously undefeated Sergey Lipinets.

After the win over Lipinets, which was Garcia’s second¬†consecutive bout at 140, he made a decision to drop back to lightweight for a unification with Easter.

Now he’s looking to jump up by twelve pounds, against a fighter who many regard as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.

“Everybody has told Mikey, ‘slow down, take a couple of fights at ’47,’ the more you tell him, ‘You’re crazy to do it.’ the more he wants to do it,” said Espinoza, who’s network has televised Garcia’s last five bouts.

“Everybody has tried to talk to him, Robert (his brother and co-trainer), Eduardo (the father) has, all the Garcia’s, the entire Garcia family has had an intervention and he will not take no for an answer.”

Garcia, improved to 39-0 (30) on Saturday night by defeating Easter. Spence last performed on June 16th where he blew out Carlos O’Campo in one round.
