Now we have the inside evidence on why Jose Mourinho has been so grumpy.
Manchester United fans reacted furiously to a video showing the players looking “slow, sloppy and lazy” in a training drill on the USA tour.
Main summer buy Fred, Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata are among the superstars who seem more like reluctant kids forced into sport at school at sport than athletes in their prime eagerly awaiting a new season.
The one-touch routine – with a player in the middle trying to nick the ball off a circle of stars around him – should be an ideal showcase for fast-paced flicks and tricks.
But instead the players fail to string more than a few passes together as they shuffle about almost as if they have jetlag – two weeks after they arrived in America!
One fan commented: “Wow. You can smell the apathy.”
And another tweet said: “Haha. Like watching 6 year olds compared to City.”
Other responses included: “That’s the worst I’ve ever seen”.. Rubbish” .. “Wtf passes are those”.. and “Shocking”.
And perhaps summing up United’s fears for the season, one supporter posted: “The lads can’t connect together 10 one touch passes? That’s where we fail sometimes..”
A cheeky tweet from phil@bluecitizens suggested – or taunted: “Perfection.”
It is often said pictures never lie. Mourinho, his players and Old Trafford fans must hope this video does.
it was only a warm-up for the main training in Miami. as players split into two circles to knock the ball around.
But it hardly suggested United are full of the hunger they will need to challenge their neighbours and last season’s runaway Premier League champions Man City.
But on the evidence of this video perhaps fans should be worried that he is not MORE critical.
